The psychology and characteristics of lying in a socio-legal context
Keywords:
lie, detection ability, frequency ofoccurrenceAbstract
The complexity of lying as a phenomenon highlights the importance of context, psychological motives, and the frequency of lying as well as the ability to detect falsehoods. Respondents rarely mention resorting to lies, suggesting a more positive self-assessment of their behavior in relation to the truth. The ability to tell and detect lies is generally moderate. The motivations behind lies are primarily aimed at protecting one's self-image and justifying behaviors. Implicit lying and self-justification are among the most common forms of reality distortion.
